Steven R. Goldstein, MD is on the Faculty of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at New York University School of Medicine, as a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Director of Gynecologic Ultrasound. He is currently President-Elect of the International Menopause Society. He is past President and Fellow of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine. He is a past President of the North American Menopause Society.  He is a past Chairman of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, New York Section.  

He has published seven books on women’s health topics, including menopause, perimenopause early pregnancy monitoring, abnormal uterine bleeding and gynecologic ultrasound. He has authored more than 60 chapters as well as over 80 original research articles.

Michael Auerbach, MD, FACP, is a hematologist/oncologist at Auerbach Hematology and Oncology Associates, Inc., in Baltimore, Maryland, and a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington DC. 

Dr. Auerbach earned his medical degree from New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio. Subsequently, he completed his fellowship training in hematology and oncology at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and Harlem Hospital Center in New York, New York, where he went on to do a research fellowship in thrombosis and hemostasis at Columbia. He is board-certified in internal medicine and in the subspecialties of hematology and medical oncology.

Dr. Auerbach has authored or coauthored over 160 journal articles, books, chapters and meeting abstracts, most recently focusing on intravenous iron supplementation in pregnancy and in patients with RLS.  He is an author of the Treatment of Iron Deficiency in Adults, Anemia in Pregnancy, and Diagnosis and Causes of Iron Deficiency for UpToDate.  He is a member of numerous professional organizations, a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and Honorary Emeritus member of the American Society of Hematology. He currently serves on the scientific board of the Network for Advancement of Transfusion Alternatives, advises the Society for the Advancement of Blood Management and is on the Editorial Boards of the American Journal of Hematology and Expert Review of Hematology. 

In 2010, along with three colleagues, he participated in the first educational session ever delivered on the use of intravenous iron, at the American Society of Hematology’s annual meeting and in 2016 presented another on complete replacement dosing in an initial, brief, single visit.  In December, 2017 he was the principal author of the first prospective study of intravenous iron in pregnancy performed in the United States which was published in the American Journal of Medicine.

Dr. Makai is a gynecologist and, since 2009, director of minimally-invasive gynecologic surgery for Christiana Care’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, in Newark, Delaware.

Dr. Makai earned her medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, where she won the Thomas F. Cook Prize for Excellence in Obstetrics and Gynecology. She completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the combined program between Brigham and Women’s and Massachusetts General hospitals in Boston.

During her training she received the student teaching award from Harvard Medical School, and she was named Outstanding Resident by the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons. After residency, Dr. Makai completed a fellowship in gynecologic endoscopy at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton, Massachusetts. During this time, she was also a clinical instructor in obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive biology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. In addition to her training, Dr. Makai worked as a staff physician in obstetrics and gynecology at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Dr. Makai’s professional interests include providing fertility-sparing and minimally-invasive treatment options to patients with abnormal bleeding, pelvic pain, fibroids and endometriosis. She strives to promote innovation and technology to benefit the care of women. Her research interests include evaluating the benefit of robotic-assisted laparoscopy for hysterectomy, hysteroscopic surgery and determining how to identify and provide the highest quality and best value of care for women.

Dr. Makai actively participates in Christiana Care’s residency in obstetrics and gynecology as a faculty member and educator. She also serves on departmental committees representing gynecology to perioperative services, establishing gynecological surgeon performance reporting and promoting value improvement.

1. Describe the prevalence, natural history, and morbid impact of IDA in women suffering from AUB, and associated quality of life implications
2. Analyze current challenges impacting the appropriate care of women with IDA secondary to AUB
3. Apply current standards of care and available guidelines addressing IDA to the diagnosis and management of IDA in women with AUB
4. Utilize an effective therapeutic approach to address iron replacement in patients with AUB.
